Ok here we go. You have your car painted a solid color, clear coated and ready to add FLAMES to it. I'm gonna use a van this time so you can see what I'm doing better. I've painted the van Gun Metal Gray and will be adding green to blue flames. |
First you need these supplies before we get started. 2 inch Masking tape, x-acto knife with a blade likes in the picture, sandwich bags, scissor, scotch tape, pencil, red Sanford Sharpie ultra fine point permanent marker, some Q-tips, some toothpicks and a piece of plywood for working on (if you like to set in your recliner like me to do your drawing). Oh and some paint of coarse. LOL!! |
Now cut 3 pieces of tape longer than the length of the car. Put one piece on the board where you want to work and put the other two off to the side. |
Set the car on it's top and center it on the piece of masking tape. Now draw the outline of the car on the tape. Make sure you get as close as you can to the cars outline so the mask is the same size as the car. |
This will give you the size that the flames will need to be for the top. |
First mark where the windows come to, so the flames will miss the windows where they go over to the sides. Now start drawing the flames on this piece of tape. But only draw half of the flame. Just draw to the center of the cars outline, I'm gonna show you a trick for getting both sides of the flames to match (on the top and the sides). |
Now that you've drawn half the flame, take the sandwich bag and cut a piece off it that's larger than the tape. |
Tape the piece of baggie over the tape you have drawn the half a flame on. Use the Stanford Sharpie permanent marker (a red one works best) and trace the half of the flame that you have drawn. |
After you've got it trace, pull it up and turn it over. Line it up with the half of the flame that's been drawn on the tape and tape it back down. Now trace over it with a pencil. Now, after you've trace over it on the reverse side pull up a corner of it to see if it transferred to the tape. If it didn't go back over it a little harder. Work the pencil back and forth in short movements to make sure it transfers good. |
Now pull the transfer off, you should have a complete flame now that's the same on both sides. Draw over it with the pencil so you can see it better. |
Now take the x-acto knife and cut the tape down the lentgh of the car's outline and remove the extra tape. |
Get one of the other two pieces of tape and put it on the side of the piece of tape for the top's flame. |
On this pieces of tape make and outline of the side of the car. Do it the same as in the above step for outlining the top, make sure to get the outline of the window and wheel wells. |
Now draw your flame on that piece of tape for the side of the car. Draw the whole flame this time. Start drawing from where the flame for the top ends, so it will all line up. |
Now go through the steps to trace the flame. But this time, tape it over the third piece of tape that's for the other side of the car. |
Now you should have a complete flame for the whole car. |
